Best wordpress backup plugin freely available

The best wordpress backup plugin freely available that I have found, after a long search I might add, would be the one from backup-technology.com, due to the ease of use, backup options available and outstanding support.

Given that this is a free wordpress backup plugin, you would be forgiven for thinking that the customer support would be less than top notch, and that the options would be either very limited or completely unfathomable.

Indeed with many wordpress backup plugin’s I have tried (and I have tried most of the top listed plugin’s at the time of writing this!) the options were extremely limited and very difficult to understand. Whilst it is true that I do enjoy playing with a bit of code from time to time, I have to be honest and state that I don’t really know what I am doing most of the time!

And so it was with relief that I managed to stumble upon this plugin after searching through Google, and got it installed and up and running quite quickly. My first manual backup with download to pc went like clockwork, and I was quite impressed with the plugin. But then I attempted my first manual online backup.

This was when I ran into my first problem using the backup plugin. Luckily for me, I was pretty sure what the problem was. In fact the plugin gave me a clue with the way it stated the error I was having. From memory the error was stated along the lines of:

“ERROR: YOUR WORDPRESS BLOG URL APPEARS TO BE INCORRECT – PLEASE CHECK”

I was fairly certain that the cause of this was the way that my webhost (123-reg) added wordpress blogs into directories other than the root on your domain. I don’t know the technical term for this, and I guess this doesn’t really matter anyway, but I felt that the cause of this was that 123-reg had put my wordpress blog into http://www.yearn2earncash.com:/blog rather than http://www.yearn2earncash.com/blog from their 123-reg apps into my domain.

I required some help with this and made a post into the forum for the plugin which you can read here (scroll down near the bottom of the posts), and was delighted to get such a quick response with a promise of a fix in the next update (There was also an acknowledgement that my problem might have been due to the above rather poorly explained issue with 123-reg)

Sure enough a fix was made in the next update. This was the truly surprising bit. The next update was finished much quicker than I expected. Considering that this particular wordpress backup plugin is free I would never have though that they would be so prompt at looking into an issue and getting it resolved.

I installed the new update, and now when I try the online backup it works perfectly. Absolutely everything I want is backed up now – database, files everything. All the techie stuff that I still don’t even really understand is all backed up into an encrypted backup on their servers.

And you can select from several different levels of encryption for your own wordpress backup. Once that is done, its time to select the schedule for your backups, whether you want the backup to be online or emailed to you, and exactly what files are to be backed up. They will even compress the backup for you to keep the overall size down a bit!

In my humble opinion this is the best wordpress backup plugin freely available. And when I say “freely available” I do mean free, because although you have to pay if your backup is more than 100mb (The free space you get on their servers is limited to this amount) you can happily use it if your backup is less than that.

There is a little tip there for anyone that is trying to keep the size of their wordpress backups down. As I upload all images and videos to my domain via FTP, rather than by using the wordpress media insertion features, the size of my backup remains as small as possible.

And as I always have a full backup of my entire website on two computers (so that should the worst happen with my webhost, I have everything ready) I know that I can quickly upload everything again, and after reinstalling my wordpress blog using this plugin, comfortably know that no one will ever know there has been a disaster!

I realise that it requires a little more effort to create a blog post my manually inserting the videos and images into them that you want, rather than simply clicking on the add media button, but it can save you some money if you can avoid going above the 100mb limit.

Anyway try out the plugin from backup-technology.com and let me know what you think of it in the comments below, I think you will agree with me that this is the best wordpress backup plugin freely available.
