So what is bright shiny object syndrome? (BSOS)
And how do you cure it if you have it?
Well this Entrepreneur.com article describes bright shiny object syndrome for you.
Essentially BSOS it is the desire to keep purchasing the latest technological breakthrough in order to keep yourself one step ahead of your competition.
(Some time the thing you are buying is hardly a technological breakthrough at all, but if you have a really bad case of bright shiny object syndrome you dont even have time to check out a product fully enough before you have moved on to the next product in your list of desired purchases!)
I should know about getting a fairly bad case of bright shiny object syndrome.
I am ashamed to admit just how much money I have spent since the start of 2019 on products designed to boost my business online.
(Okay I will admit it – probably around the £5K mark!)
To some of you that sounds like a massive amount of money to waste on web tools.
To others (those with a near fatal case of BSOS) £5K in six months is chicken feed.
A drop in the online ocean!
Some of you would think nothing of plowing in every penny you have (and all that you can borrow) to get the latest tech in the fight to build a profitable online business.
To those that think that way, yet desperately desire the help to change, I bring you hope.
I mentioned at the start of this post that there is a cure.
And this is it:
UNSUBSCRIBE FROM EVERY EMAIL LIST YOU ARE ON AND CHANGE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS!
That way you will not hear about each new tool released to the market.
For me it is working, but I admit it is a brutal one to take.
The fear of missing out (FOMO) is what keeps people on an internet marketers email list.
FOMO is also the major driver of an internet marketers online profits.
But if you want a 99% certain cure for BSOS not mentioned in the Entrepreneur.com article above then you will begin unsubscribing right now.
You may wonder why I recommend changing your email address when unsubscribing should be enough to ensure that you never hear from a marketer again?
Well the fact is that some internet marketers (not mentioning anyones names) are so damned persistent that they will keep emailing any email address they have on their system long after you have tried to unsubscribe that email address from their list.
The only way to be 100% sure that they cannot email you again is to change your email address everywhere you need to and then delete the old email address altogether.
(Dont be tempted to simply stop checking it for a while – the very next time you do log in again you will see all the emails backed up inside it and will just go on a massive concentrated buying spree once more!)
I have spent the last few weeks (yes really, weeks) going through everything in my Lastpass vault changing my email account for everything I still value to ensure that I can finally delete my old email address.
It took me that long to do it.
But I can at last be certain I have changed everything I need to and have now deleted my old email address.
I have purchased the last of tools I need to (a stock image license in fact) and will not be buying anything else.
I do not need anything else.
Aside from renewing my hosting, I am done.
I am cured!
You can be too – if you follow my advice.
(Just dont go searching the web again for lists to sign up for looking for the next “latest bright shiny object” wonder tool – for that way lies madness!)
